What is Child Bed Poverty?

Bed poverty is a hidden issue affecting families across the UK. It means not having a safe, comfortable place to sleep, which can have a serious impact on a child’s health, wellbeing, and ability to learn.

How to Identify Children Who Need Our Support

Child poverty isn’t always easy to spot, but there are subtle signs that can indicate when a family is struggling. Zarach has created a simple guide to help teachers, social workers, and community leaders identify children who might need support. From frequent tiredness and absenteeism to hygiene issues or poor concentration, these signs can be red flags that a child isn’t getting the rest they need.

Many families facing bed poverty experience:

  • Broken beds and unsuitable bedding – Some children are sleeping on damaged or mouldy mattresses because their families cannot afford to replace them.
  • Sharing beds and rooms – Parents and siblings often have to share beds because there isn’t enough space or money for separate bedding.
  • Sleeping on the floor – Many children are forced to sleep on makeshift beds, sofas, or even in bathtubs when there is nowhere else to go.

A good night’s sleep is essential for a child’s physical and mental development. Without a proper bed, children struggle to concentrate at school, stay healthy, and feel secure in their own home.

Spotting the signs

There are a number of ways bed poverty may present itself:

  • Too tired to engage at school
  • Frequent absence or late on a morning
  • Behavioural issues
  • Dark circles around the eyes
  • Falling asleep at their desk
