More than just a bed

By Helen Kenneally, National Family Engagement Manager

Published on: February 7, 2025

At Zarach, we believe that every child deserves a good night’s sleep, but the truth is, we are providing more than just beds. As National Family Engagement Manager, I have the privilege of witnessing the real-life impact our work has on families across the country. Yes, we deliver beds, but what we offer goes far beyond furniture—we provide dignity, hope, and the foundation for a better future.

A Bed Is Just the Beginning

When we deliver a bed bundle to a family in need, the immediate reaction is always relief. Parents feel the weight of stress lifting, knowing that their child will finally have a comfortable place to sleep. But the significance of that delivery doesn’t end there. A bed symbolizes stability in a child’s life—something they can call their own in what might be an otherwise unstable environment.

For many families, this support can be the first step toward rebuilding their lives. A child with a safe, comfortable place to rest is more likely to attend school regularly, be attentive in class, and have the energy to engage in learning and play. A bed is not just about sleep; it’s about providing the foundation for success.

Building Trust and Relationships

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is building trust with the families we support. We aren’t just dropping off a bed and walking away. We listen, we understand, and we respond to their needs. Often, the families we work with are facing complex challenges—from financial hardship to housing insecurity. Our engagement goes beyond one interaction. It’s about building a relationship where families know they are seen, heard, and supported.

This deeper connection helps us understand how we can make a more meaningful, lasting impact in their lives. By working closely with schools, social workers, and local communities, we can ensure the help we provide extends beyond immediate relief and helps set families on a path to long-term improvement.

Creating Opportunities for Hope

More than anything, I’ve learned that our work is about restoring hope. When we deliver a bed, we’re saying to these families, “We care. You matter.” It’s incredible how something as simple as a bed can spark a renewed sense of dignity and optimism in families who may have felt forgotten.

I’ve seen firsthand how a child’s self-esteem improves after receiving a bed bundle. They’re no longer embarrassed to invite friends over or ashamed to tell teachers about their home life. A bed gives them a sense of belonging and security—basic needs that every child should have, but that too many are lacking.

At Zarach, we will continue to provide more than just beds. We will continue to engage with families, listen to their stories, and work toward creating a future where no child has to sleep on the floor. The work we do changes lives, and I am incredibly proud to be part of this journey.

To everyone who has supported us, shared our mission, or worked alongside us, thank you. Together, we’re offering more than a bed—we’re offering hope, stability, and a better tomorrow.
